Boiler Installer Standards – What Are They?

Installer standards cover far more than connecting a boiler to existing pipes. They include legal registration, competent system design, safe installation, proper commissioning, complete documentation and reliable aftercare.

Boiler installer standards are the legal, technical and professional requirements that determine how a boiler and heating system should be designed, installed, tested and handed over to the homeowner.

A good boiler installation should not simply produce heating and hot water on the day the engineer leaves. It should be:

  • Safe.

  • Properly sized.

  • Suitable for the property.

  • Energy efficient.

  • Controllable.

  • Compliant with the applicable Building Regulations.

  • Installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Fully commissioned.

  • Correctly registered.

The legal minimum standards are important, but high-quality installers should go further. They should consider the performance of the complete heating system rather than treating the boiler as an isolated appliance.

Gas Safe Registration

 

Anyone employed to work on a gas boiler in a domestic property must be registered with Gas Safe Register and qualified for the particular type of gas work being carried out. It is illegal for an unregistered person to undertake regulated gas work.

Gas Safe registration applies to both:

  • The registered business undertaking the work.

  • The individual engineer attending the property.

A company displaying a Gas Safe logo is not enough on its own. The homeowner should check that the individual engineer is registered and qualified to work on boilers.

Gas Safe engineers carry an identification card. The front displays the engineer’s photograph, registration number and expiry date. The reverse lists the categories of work the engineer is qualified to undertake, such as domestic boilers, LPG appliances or commercial heating.

Does Every Gas Safe Engineer Have the Same Qualifications?

 

No.

Gas Safe registration is divided into different categories and scopes of work.

Can a Plumber Install a Boiler and Have It Signed Off Later?

 

No.

A person who is not Gas Safe registered may undertake certain non-gas work, such as installing radiators or sections of water pipework.

However, work on the gas boiler, gas supply and final boiler connections must be completed by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.

A registered engineer cannot simply inspect and sign off regulated gas work knowingly completed by an unregistered person. HSE guidance states that both the unregistered installer and the registered engineer could face enforcement action in those circumstances.

The engineer responsible for the installation must control and take responsibility for the regulated gas work.

Oil Boiler Installer Standards

 

Oil-fired boilers require a different set of competencies.
